The Room Illuminated

Room 100 – Kate and Jon’s favourite room revisited!

Our favourite room. What goes on in here? Netflix, after-dinner glasses of port with friends, board games, chess games, cups of tea, holiday-planning, reading, debating, cups of tea, homework-helping, couch-sleeping, planking, laughing, cups of tea…Yep…lots of tea!

This little gallery wall has remained unchanged for a while now, I’ve always liked it.

This room feels so much more lived in than the rest of our house that it draws everything into it: everything we buy looks best in this room.

It’s the room that we end up together a the end of the day with a cup of tea to chat, laugh and reconnect.

The portrait of our dearly departed dog – Pedro, was painted by our talented friend and illustrator, Catherine Berruer , for my (Kate’s) 40th. It moved us both to tears to see his smiling likeness perfectly captured.

1. What’s the room and who uses it?

J: It was the lounge room (still is…) but now that we’ve had an extension, it’s aka the ‘front room’. The back room is for the kids to watch their movies and have friends over, while Kate and I snuggle-up up front.

K: What he said :)

2. What do you do for a crust?
J: I was a teacher and am now an educational researcher.

K: I curate this awesome blog, whilst also working as a freelance photographer. Most of the work I do is Interior Photography (no surprises there!), but I also love taking portraits when I have the chance.

3. What goes on in the room?
J: Netflix, after-dinner glasses of port with friends, board games, chess games, cups of tea, holiday-planning, reading, debating, cups of tea, homework-helping, couch-sleeping, planking, laughing, cups of tea…

K: We do drink a lot of tea don’t we!

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?
J: The portrait of our dearly departed dog – Pedro, the wanderer. It was painted by Kate’s close friend, Cat, for her 40th. When Kate unwrapped it the night of her 40th birthday party, it moved us both to tears to see his smiling likeness perfectly captured.

K: No surprises that Pedro’s portrait is also my favourite piece. I can hand on my heart say that I have never received a more thoughtful, beautiful gift . I look at it every day and smile.

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?
J: It’s starting to fill up a bit! Maybe a nice reading chair for the corner? We sort of have to finish the rest of the house first though – the front lounge is the least neglected part of the house.

K: A new floor rug! But I feel like I’m still traumatised by the experience of rug shopping for the rumpus room (eventually I caved and had my gorgeous designer mate Jess help me choose one), so I may procrastinate a bit longer.

6. Describe the room in three words.
J: Me and Kate

K: Awww…he’s gorgeous.

7. Why do you love this room?
J: It feels so much more lived in than the rest of our house that it draws everything into it: everything we buy looks best in this room. But also, because it is where – every night – Kate and I end up together with a cup of tea to chat, laugh and reconnect.

K: There’s a warmth and energy to the space that is hard to explain. We’ve had some great times in this room – with each other, with the kids, with friends- it will always be my fave.

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?
J: For me, it’s just all the times we’ve had people over for dinner and ended up in the lounge chatting away till late.

K: Watching the movie ET with our son Seb when he was home sick one day, both weeping like babies at the “Come”… “Stay” scene – it gets me every time!
