The Room Illuminated

Room 98 – Victoria McKenzie’s sunroom

“This is the room to stare out the windows into the garden, to plan new plantings and to watch the clouds go by.”

Woven baskets are just one of the many collections displayed in the home. Victoria has made many of the baskets herself.

“I love the light, the windows and the wallpaper. It is the perfect fit for my collections and plants.”

Coffee table detail.

“I started collecting shell necklaces when I was 20 in New Zealand. They come from op shops and friends, there are over 350 and I love them all. And yes, there are occasions I pop one or two on.”

Victoria shares the sunroom with Daphne, her Bengal cat.

1. What’s the room and who uses it?
It’s the sunroom. Daphne, my Bengal cat, and I use it and friends when they visit.

2. What do you do for a crust?
I am a set decorator for film and TV. I really do have the best job for a collector. I’m in and out of op shops constantly, looking for props and dressings for the shows I am working on and I can’t help but spot another gem to bring home to add to the collection. Can you ever have enough wooden birds?

3. What goes on in the room?
This is the room to stare out the windows into the garden, to plan new plantings, watch the clouds go by, snuggle up with Daphne, read lying on the comfy couch, have tea with friends, lounge on the carpet with wine in hand, eat at the table, and it’s the gateway to the garden, so the table is often a wild mass of bulbs, books and gardening gloves.

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?
It’s the shell necklace collection. I started collecting them when I was 20 in New Zealand. They come from op shops and friends. There are over 350 and I love them all. And yes, there are occasions I pop one or two on. I have even made friends via my shell necklaces! It is a pleasure to collect them and make a new hook to hang them on each time. I have certainly found the perfect house to display them in. I have not made one myself, though I have made many of the woven baskets in this room. They compete with my favourite pieces actually.

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?
Well I am always adding to the collections. The Flokati rug is a new addition I am excited about, I am not sure I could fit anything more in!

6. What do other people say when they see your room for the first time?
“Wow, whoa, that really is a collection!! Love the light in here. Did you make the shell table?”

7. Why do you love this room?
I love the light and the windows and the wallpaper. It is the perfect fit for my collections and plants.

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?
It’s such a warm and inviting room, there are so many memories that not one particular memory stands out. It’s a room that makes everyone who visits feel comfortable.
