The Room Illuminated

Room 97 – Tania Bell’s rumpus room

“I love this room as it’s the first room in my home that I have totally designed and decorated from scratch. My husband Andrew is a builder and so he has done all the hard work.”

Stumpy’s home – the pet lizard!

“It is full of happy colours and every day when I walk into the room those green doors greet me, and my heart sings!”

“The school desk was a hard rubbish find many, many years ago. It had seen better days, so Andrew replaced a few pieces of timber and restored it to it’s former glory. It is used daily by our daughter, Freya.”

“In three words this room is colourful, textured and retro-inspired!”

This fun family project hangs on the wall . “The piece of drift wood was picked up from a beach family holiday we went on a couple of years ago. The iron numbers & porcelain conductor came off the ironbark crossbars from old power lines and pieces of petrified wood were a memento from a recent holiday to Penola S.A. So we combined all these pieces into a sculptural wall hanging!”

“This side table was hand made by Andrew’s grandfather, so a treasured heirloom.”

“This was a gift when our child, Freya was born. It represents the love a mother has for her child, so something I hold dear to me.”

1. What’s the room and who uses it?
It is our rumpus room and it is mainly used by our 11 year old daughter and myself.

2. What do you do for a crust?
I am the founder and director of an interior decoration and design business, called Green Room Interiors.

3. What goes on in the room?
This room is primarily used by our daughter as her chill out space either by herself or when she has friends come over. It is where she performs her many musical performances and practices her contemporary dance moves. I also love to do my daily meditations in this space at dawn before the day begins.
We occasionally sit and watch a movie as a family in this room with the company of our pet stumpy tail lizard, Stumpy!

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?
I love my vintage lamp which I picked up many years ago from a second hand shop. It has the original 60’s brightly patterned lamp shade, which set the tone for the playful colour scheme in the room.

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?
I am lusting after a hand woven circular artwork by the talented fibre artist, Tammy Kanat. One of her pieces would really compliment the artwork that I already have in the room.

6. Describe the room in three words.
Colourful, textured and retro-inspired!

7. Why do you love this room?
I love this room as it is the first room in my home that I have totally designed and decorated from scratch. My husband Andrew is a builder and so he has done all the hard work, such as replacing a mismatched window, re-plastering, laying the slate floor tiles, painting and making the built in storage cupboard that stretches along the entirety of the back wall. A recent addition was the coffee table which he made from an old ironbark crossbar and plumbing fittings as legs.
It is full of happy colours and every day when I walk into the room those green doors greet me and my heart sings!

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?
I think the memories have only just begun in this room, now that it is completed. However, I cherish the times I snuggle up on the sofa with my little family to watch an entertaining movie on the box.
