The Room Illuminated

Room 93 – Emily Chandler’s bedroom

“This is my bedroom and creative nest, I share it with my cat and most of the people who walk down the alley behind my window after dark – yeah the mesh curtain doesn’t leave much to the imagination!”

“I live the knit-lyf. It took a bit of fluffing around before I worked out that you can actually make a living from textile design.”

“Lots of dreaming goes on in here! I’m very nostalgic so I have surrounded myself with a whole host of trinkets, postcards and ephemera that I’ve collected on my travels.”

“The window allows in the most glorious afternoon light, which is beautiful to have beaming on you while reading or knitting.”

“I want more plants…yeah I know it’s the whole ‘millennial obsession’ of the moment but I just love how they bring a space alive!

“The general consensus seems to be that it is an accurate extension of me…like my mind spilled out in room form.”

“I rent a studio space three minutes walk away from this VERY room (I’ve timed it) where I make stuff for my label Millie Mosca. Millie has been on hiatus while I do the whole professional knitting thing so essentially I am just fluffing up my own wardrobe at the moment.”

“My bed…this baby is soooooo plush and HUGE, and best of all I don’t share it with anyone so I feel like a legit queen nestled in amongst all these blankets and pillows and throws!”

“It’s teensy but perfect for my needs; it fits me like a glove!”

1. What’s the room and who uses it?
This is my bedroom and creative nest, I share it with my cat and most of the people who walk down the alley behind my window after dark – yeah the mesh curtain doesn’t leave much to the imagination!

2. What do you do for a crust?
I live the knit-lyf. It took a bit of fluffing around before I worked out that you can actually make a living from textile design. I fell in love with knitting when I did my BA of Textile Design at RMIT. Now I design hand knitting and crochet patterns for Australia’s biggest yarn manufacturer. I couldn’t get enough of RMIT so I’m back there this semester teaching the knitting elective.

I rent a studio space three minutes walk away from this VERY room (I’ve timed it) where I make stuff for my label Millie Mosca…Millie has been on hiatus while I do the whole professional knitting thing so essentially I am just fluffing up my own wardrobe at the moment – but I am always on the lookout for new collaborations or art based projects. I’m hoping to exhibit with my mum and grandma next year, bringing together three generations of textile artists!

3. What goes on in the room?
Lots of dreaming goes on in here! I’m very nostalgic so I have surrounded myself with a whole host of trinkets, postcards and ephemera that I’ve collected on my travels. I have had to curate the collection given how tiny my room is but I love having everything out on display – I’m a more is more kinda gal. I’m also a “throw glitter at it” kinda gal…I have a drawer dedicated to it in my vanity!
Working in the creative industries can be quite draining so I often have a project on the go. Having a bit of knitting or sewing in my mitts is meditative and grounding. At the moment I’m latch hooking a rug to use up some of my yarn stash (it’s sitting at hoarder levels already).

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?
All of the bits and pieces in here hold value for me (including several amazing artworks by my grandma!) but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it’s my bed! This baby is soooooo plush and HUGE, and best of all I don’t share it with anyone so I feel like a legit queen nestled in amongst all these blankets and pillows and throws!

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?
I want more plants…yeah I know it’s the whole ‘millennial obsession of the moment’ but I just love how they bring a space alive! Obviously floor space is at a premium so I’m trying to work out how to utilise the ceiling to it’s full potential. ;)

6. What do other people say when they see your room for the first time?
Usually “sheesh it’s cosy” and then they start peering at all the craziness cluttered around…the general consensus seems to be that it is an accurate extension of me…like my mind spilled out in room form.

7. Why do you love this room?
It’s teensy but perfect for my needs; it fits me like a glove!

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?
I guess it’s more a collective of lovely memories I have from this sweet little room…the window allows in the most glorious afternoon light, which is beautiful to have beaming on you while reading or knitting or even just wallowing in a hangover 20 episodes deep in some terrible TV show…not that that happens much (teehee).
