The Room Illuminated

Room 94 – Elly’s Squire’s bedroom

Elly’s bedroom, or as she puts it, her “cosy sanctuary from the world.”

“I’m a comedy human of all trades, master of a few of those said trades. I would say my preferred term is “Vaudevillian”. I perform under the stage name Clara Cupcakes and run the gambit from clowning, to stand up to circus, to musical comedy.”

“My desk was the first piece of furniture I ever bought myself. It was from a giant generic furniture store. I added the pink gem handles and the oilcloth top.”

“It’s pretty much a real world representation of my brain. It couldn’t be anyone else’s but mine. And, unlike brain sometimes, it’s always a warm, comforting and safe place.”

“I used to plan all these elaborate showgirl costumes with crystals and feathers before I realised I wasn’t a showgirl. I was a stupid, funny, clown idiot. So these feathers are sitting pretty until I decide to transform into a funny idiot showgirl.”

“Every Clara Cupcakes show I do gets a new look and a new wig.”

“This is a cute lil’ card from a Mark Ryden postcard set. I have a few of them spread around my room so I can pretend I can afford his art.”

“The teddy bear, Browny (such a creative name) has been with me forever. I think he’s a Pookie Bear from Garfield and has no leather on his nose because I chewed it off while I was teething.”

“I have always been a collector of tchotchkes. Every little thing in my room is a memory from a different moment in my life. The pink cat is from my time in Japan. The carousel is from my Dad. I was mesmerised by it when I was little and he went back to the store the same day and surprised me with it in the morning.”

“I have a fascination with dustbowl circuses and freak shows. It was such an odd moment in history. A very dear friend of mine gifted me this from a series of dolls based on that era and I love her.”

1. What’s the room and who uses it?
My bedroom and cozy sanctuary from the world. It’s mostly used by me and my cats who like to nap there/knock over my things for attention/check to see if I’m awake because it’s biscuit time aka the most important time.

2. What do you do for a crust?
I’m a comedy human of all trades, master of a few of those said trades. I would say my preferred term is “Vaudevillian”. I perform under the stage name Clara Cupcakes and run the gambit from clowning to stand up to circus to musical comedy. I’ve also started dabbling in art a lot more which has been sitting dormant for a while. It’s my favourite thing in the whole wide world.

3. What goes on in the room?
I sleep, work, eat, draw, create and dream. It’s the incubator where I hatch a lot of my ideas for shows and then furiously scribble them down. I relax and get away from things with delicious snacks, video games and terrible movies. Where I snuggle in the world’s comfiest armchair and read. It’s everything.

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?
Oh that’s so hard! I adore everything in my room. I can tell you where every single thing came from and the story behind it. There are a couple that are extra special though. I love my wardrobe! I restored and painted it myself in a style I have dubbed “Art Dicko”. I’m also very fond of the portrait my very good boy painted of me. OH! And the giant kewpie doll head my friend Janet found on the side of the road. They all make me smile with warm fuzzies every time I see them. I’m sorry this is 3 things DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE!

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?
I’m forever on the hunt for a floor rug that’s not ugly. Seriously can someone please make one that’s not a complete eyesore thank you! That and painting the rest of my dark vintage furniture in pastel colours.

6. Why do you love this room?
It’s pretty much a real world representation of my brain. It couldn’t be anyone else’s but mine. And, unlike brain sometimes, it’s always a warm, comforting and safe place.

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?
My housemates are the most wondrous beings and we all live for the greatest reality TV show of all time, RuPaul’s Drag Race. For the finale of the most recent season, we all got together in my room with a couple of other dear friends and watched it. Our collective favourite, Sasha Velour, won in the most epic lipsych battle ever! We all cheered and hugged at the end. It was so joyous and silly. I love having a room that’s also a magic space for gathering my loved ones.
