The Room Illuminated

Room 102- Marcus’ Living Room

1. What’s the room and who uses it?

This is the living room of the inner-city terrace I share with my wife, Olivia. It has great aspect, is large enough for us two plus houseplants, but it sure starts to feel crowded when we add more people to the mix!

2. What do you do for a crust?

I’ve taught French in secondary schools for longer than I care to mention, and recently branched out into the role of assistant principal as well.

3. What goes on in the room?

Plenty of reading, listening to music, and trying to keep up-to-date with RuPaul’s Drag Race…

4. Favourite piece in the room and why?

After spotting some abstract paintings by Kiwi artist Ed Bats in Wellington years ago, we are starting to build a nice little collection of his work; that’s if two pieces constitute a collection! In any case, his work has real impact and is a great contrast to our other smaller, busier pieces.

5. Anything on your wish list that you would love to add to the space?

A period-appropriate window is soon to be installed, so after that, it will feel much more complete, not to mention cooler in summer.

6. Describe the room in three words

Textural, harmonious, fun.

7. Why do you love this room?

I really enjoy the localised display areas, the smaller details that catch your eye and pique interest. Minimal it is not, but I love the interplay between unlikely objects that feels strangely unified.

8. What’s one lovely memory you have whilst being in the room?

In the cooler months, nothing beats having family over, when we serve up freshly baked scones & cups of tea.
